Studying Structure: Middleton & Shakespeare Resource

A pie-chart of size of role for Middleton’s A Chaste Made in Cheapside

Pat Lockley of Oxford University Computing Services was inspired by his discovery of Thomas Middleton, and created two wonderful collections of resources: The Science of Middleton and the Science of Shakespeare.

These pictures and movies illustrate in a fun and interactive way things like:

  • The number of lines for which given characters interact
  •  Who talks when and to whom in Middleton’s plays
  • Lengths of individual speeches
  • Pie charts illustrating the size of different roles
